what is a fanlisting?
"A fanlisting is simply an online listing of fans of a subject, such as a TV show, actor, or musician, that is created by an individual and open for fans from around the world to join." -- TFL.org
Simply enough, this is a fanlisting for Shishio Makoto. ^^
Name: Shishio Makoto
Seiyuu: Masanori Ikeda
Caution: certain spoilers ahead
Shishio Makoto appeared in the Kyoto Arc of the series Rurouni Kenshin as the main antagonist. As the successor to Kenshin's title of "hitokiri", Shishio was betrayed by the very government he killed for when the new Japanese era came about. During the Boshin War, Shishio was knocked unconscious and burned alive. Eleven years later, after living through the hellish experience, Shishio returned to overthrow the government that tried to kill him.
Appearance-wise, Shishio's entire body was burned to a severe degree, thus the "mummy" look to him. Personality-wise, he is extremely power-hungry and ambitious, using his cleverness to assemble his own army to fight against the new government. The Juppongatana, a group of the best swordsmen in Japan that Shishio brought together, served as his pawns on the battlefield. However, his fighting ability was on its own level, and it even brought Kenshin to his near-death. Unfortunately, time was Shishio's real enemy, as in the final battle between him and Kenshin, he bursted into flames due to his raising temperature (because of the burns on his body, he couldn't regulate his body temperature).
During his spontaneous combustion, Shishio laughed maniacally, the meaning of the laughter lost to everyone. At the end of the Kyoto Arc, he is seen with his lover Yumi and most loyal servant Hoji in Hell. All three walk off into the distance, with Shishio claiming that he will conquer Hell.
If you want to learn more about Shishio Makoto, Wikipedia has wonderfully thorough information about him (more than what I can type up at the top of my head, anyway ^^;;...).
First of all, I would like to say that if he didn't have his body temperature literally ignite his body fat and oils, then I'm sure his plan on taking over Japan and turning it into the biggest world power would have definitely been achieved. Technically, Shishio should have won the final battle, and Kenshin would have to either give up (knowing Kenshin, that was unlikely to happen) or die (knowing Kenshin, he'd die in peace knowing that he paved the road for someone else to defeat Shishio). Watsuki did an amazing job at bringing out this diverse character, and I wish he would just do a short manga on Shishio and his beginnings just to appease the fans.
Out of all the villains of the whole of anime-dom, I think Shishio would reign at the top. Watsuki's attempt to create the "perfect villain" definitely paid off, as Shishio is (at least, from what I think is the perfect villain) THE baddest bad guy around. XD;; Aha... okay, enough with the sparkly eyes and admiring voice to who you might think was the "biggest bastard" in Rurouni Kenshin... =_=
